Are modern 21st century coins safely stored in OBW/Mint rolls or are they better off "gone through" and placed in individual 2x2s? Also, generally speaking, are they more valuable kept in their original rolls, or gone through and the finest examples pulled for 2x2s? It's understood that finding examples for grading would require opening the rolls. Thanks.

It really depends on your collecting needs and goals. If you need a specific coin for your main collection - start cracking. Otherwise OBW rolls are best kept intact and properly stored.

Right. I had in mind the rolls of 2009 nickels and dimes, rolls of 2011 and 2012 ATB, 2021 Crossing Delaware quarters, etc. Nothing I need for the albums, just possible future values. Is the paper they come in fairly inert or does it lend itself to toning?

when I hang on to OBW rolls, I like putting OBW cent rolls into nickel tubes, dimes into cent tubes, nickles into quarter tubes, quarters into the 40 coin half dollar coin tubes and store them like that, and added layer of protection in a high humility location. wrapper and all and cap them then put them away.
Rest in Peace

I do that with OBW cent rolls. Never tried it with other denominations, though I will give it a try.

Hardest part about OBW rolls is that they can get destroyed easily if you drop them or store them incorrectly. My grandfather has an uncirculated box of 1980-D cents, and I have no idea how it is still in one piece.

Sometimes the paper used on OBW rolls will tone coins, so putting them in plastics tubes is still a gamble...IMHO.
When I get a box of new cents or whatever denomination I tend to keep several rolls that are heads/tails and then open the others to look for errors/varieties and high-grade ones. I will put those in 2x2's and return the Non keepers.
