Hi Jim

Welcome to the forum !!

although there are several ways to remove the clad layer from a cent, not all are fakes !! there are legimate errors such as you describe.

Thank you Rick & Gary for responding to my question. I'll have to take a photo and then post it. It doesn't look like anything from the surface of the coin has been removed. There aren't any scratches on it and Lincoln's hair, beard, etc., are not worn at all...same on the back. I know this is a silly question, but assuming it is a real mint error, would you have any idea as to how much it's worth? Again, thank you for responding to my inquiry. - Jim

Hi Jim,

I just wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to our CC family.

I can't answer your question on value of this error, but we have members who are well-versed in Mint errors and Lincoln cents who I'm sure will be able to help you.

Hi Susan - thanks for the welcome and letting me know that there are members here who can help me. I don't suspect that I'll be retiring because of the penny - LOL - but it would be nice to know what it's worth and if someone would be interested in buying it for a fair price. Again, thanks for allowing me to participate on your site. I haven't had time to take a photo of the penny yet but hopefully within the next few days I'll be able to get that task done. If you, or anyone else could direct me to the right person/s who could let me know whether I've got a fake or a real error and it's approximate worth, I'd appreciate it. One gentleman suggested that someone might have taken the copper layer? off the penny? I didn't realize pennys were layered coins. I thought the copper was mixed with other materials/alloys to produce a sheet of copper-like metal which the coins were then stamped out of/from. I'll do some research on that. - Jim

They were a mixture from 1982 back. in 1982 they switched to copper coated zinc about halfway throught the year so there are both types made in 1982 and make 7 different types. but ever since then weve had coated pennies which are lighter and can be stripped. many high schools do it as experiments right beside making a penny look silver using magnesium sulhate. it does not tone the coin per say but it does change the color and it is very obvious when it is done. ive seen about 500 pennies that were played with by high school students as I was one of them. you can strip them and turn them silver colored. if it is stripped then you should beable to see a light hint of copper in a spot some where. there maybe some proffessional that can make it look perfect but none ive ever seen or heard of. Id say coppercoins would be the main person to ask here. as from what ive seen hes a copper expert. I'm eager to see what he has to say.
