For twenty-three years this "good" emperor guided Rome through a period of growth and relative peace. A skillful adminstrator and generous benefactor, Antoninus is a truly notable figure in Roman history. Struck in 139 AD, the coin below certainly speaks to this. The patina is attractive, with a beautiful portrait that is both authoritative and serenely philosophical. As always, I extend 1900-year-old kudos to the unknown die cutter!

You have a good eye for lifelike and characterful portraits, here and in other posts.

The skills of some Roman die cutters amaze me, considering the tools they possessed. This is certainly one example.

Thank you, erafjel. I guess, in a sense, I see these coins as sculptures. They certainly have sculptural qualities. So I look for these subtle elements in the portraits. You are sssso right when you say that the skill of the die-cutters is amazing. When you consider the size of these dies...and the tools available to cut them. The materials. Without (to my knowledge) the capability to magnify. *shaking head* It truly is mind-boggling!

Truly beautiful pieces, Paul. One and all! Sharp sculptural details on the top two. Especially the second (your iconic avatar), with furrowed brow and high cheekbone. Even the worn specimen is attractive with its variety of brown to copper toning and spots of blue patina. Very nice! The last is notable for its crustiness and scarring. You have a good eye for fine portraits and historical character!
