I was offered this coin for $2100. I am curious as to why there's no specific grade other than Gem uncirculated ?

Any thoughts ? Is this a fair deal ?

Thanks in advance.

First, check to see if the certification number is in the PCGS verification database. Second, do an internet search like on ebay sold coins and other coin auction sites to see how much these are going for, compare Gem Uncirculated label to specific grade labels like MS 69, MS 70. You can buy ungraded 2022 $50 gold eagles for around $2,000-$2,020 so ask yourself if it's worth the extra $80 or so to have one graded.

I've never submitted coins to grading companies, don't want to. On PCGS site it says Gem Uncirculated is the same as MS 65-66. I think most collectors prefer a specific grade number. The Gem Uncirculated label may be from bulk submissions and could be cheaper than having PCGS determine specific grade number for each coin. A submitter could say if it won't grade MS 70, highest possible, just make it Gem Uncirculated. But I don't know much about it.

Yup, I couldn't get the cert. number to come up on PCGS site either. Maybe they are behind posting numbers, it's a mistake or it's a fake. For this reason and since Gem Uncirculated is general and not specific grade I would not buy this coin.

Here is a Brilliant Uncirculated of mine from Fitzgerald Casino. I don't mind Unc. label from large submissions of a known collection.
