The past few years I've been adding additional mint marks, main varieties and proofs to my type set, as my progress was stagnating on my main type set due to the price and/or availability of the remaining coins on my want list. I'm making some decent progress on this new venture, and thought I'd occasionally share some of my favorite series I'm putting together. I'm quite happy with my Buffalo nickels I've put together, but I still need to add the proof types and maybe a couple more varieties. Type 1 PDS: Type 2 PDS: Only two varieties so far, but two of the main ones:

Love the toners like your 13s and 38D. Wonder if anyone has completed a toner set and at what cost? Nice job!

Thanks, Coinfrog and MisterT! My pics don't do the toned coins justice; they're far nicer in hand. @MisterT, by far the most beautiful set of high-grade toned Buffalo nickels I've ever had the privilege to see was the set built by Andrew and Alynne Skrabalac, with Angel Dee's Coins. I met them a few times at the Houston Coin Show, and have been an occasional customer over the years (my '13-P T1 Buffalo was one I purchased from them in 2014). Their set (the archive link below) was auctioned back in 2016. I don't remember the total of the sale prices, but I believe it was somewhere in the high 6-figures. It didn't contain the '16 DDO, the '18/7-D, nor the '36-D 3-1/2 legs, but other than that was complete. https://www.angeldees.com/pdfs/Ange...TonedSet.pdf

Thanks for sharing that link of the toners. In one word "breathtaking"! There is just something magical the way they take on the gold, rose and purple tones. Eye Appeal to the max for me.

I first saw that set before it was going up for auction, and I was simply left without words - nothing short of astounded. I've got some beautifully toned silver coins, but there's just something about the subtle and incredible toning of nickel coins that really attracts me.

Extremely envious. I also see the direction you took, putting thought into the undertaking. With 1913 being the first year for the design and a partial for the raised mound obvious to being a type one, choosing the final years was a stroke of brilliance for the type 2's. Outstanding group.

Great looking examples there Its obvious why they all got the green bean. Looking forward to seeing the additions on this one, especially the proofs. Maybe a DDO and DDR to add to the mix?

Yeah, congrats all day long with the 13S T1 and 38D. You should be very proud of those specimens.
Maybe on the less than perfect side, you would consider some errors like an off-center, split planchet, etc?

Thank you all for the very kind comments, including those regarding my registry sets. I starting building my certified sets 10 years ago, and I've had a great time doing it. While this Buffalo nickel set is not my most "complete" type series, under my very broad definition of "type", it's among my favorites. Quote:Maybe a DDO and DDR to add to the mix? Definitely. My dream would be the '16 DDO, but the price even for very low graded examples is way up there so I may just stick with the '35 DDR! In addition to the proofs, my want-list includes the '38D/D and '38D/S, as well as the '36D 3-1/2 legs. Quote: you would consider some errors like an off-center, split planchet, etc? At this time I don't own any error coins, but I have considered adding some off-center errors to my collection. I've always been intrigued by those. On a side note, after revisiting the Angel Dee's site and admiring once again their archived toned set of Buffalo nickels, I noticed a nicely toned 1913 T1 in PCGS MS67+ in their inventory which I just purchased today (the '13 T1 was the only one on my "to upgrade" list, and I'd purchased the MS66 pictured here over 7 years ago from the same dealer). It has no CAC sticker, but if their pic is representative I shouldn't have a problem getting the green bean added...

Quote: I also see the direction you took, putting thought into the undertaking. @Ballyhoo, yes, I do the same sort of thing with each series, trying to add early and late examples, as well as focusing on including some of the keys and semi-keys, as well.
