The first republic of Mexico continued to issue ½ escudo gold coins with new designs reflecting Mexican independence from Spain. A half escudo is equal to one dollar or 8 reales in silver. The small size made it convenient to transport and easy to hide in your personal belongings - travel was not safe in Mexico during this era. These coins were made at seven mints and many times in very small quantities. A Mexican specialist observed that the only thing rarer than the coins are the number of people that collect them. He also said that "these coins are one third very scarce to rare, one third very rare and one third good luck if you ever see on and you probably will never have an opportunity to buy one."
These coins and available literature will be discussed which will new research performed by the presenter. His ½ escudo collection has 179 genuine and 22 contemporary counterfeits. The set needs seven coins to be completed. There are three where there is one known, one with two known and one with five known and one that is believed to exist but has never been seen.
