There are so many collections offered by the mint, you'd go broke trying to collect them all. I like that they start new ones because it is easier for people to get in from the start. I love the kooks and koalas and such, but not so much that I am going to pay through the nose for the back issues. I am doing the emus but some of the other newer series, like the swans, seem too expensive. Are the Quokkas and Wombats going to be yearly series. If so, are you in? Since they are limited mintage that means you need to pay a premium. You might not get that premium back, depending on where you are trying to sell it. I have bought the three coins issued so far.

Others may disagree, but I feel you wont get that back for bullion coins. They are purely money making projects for the Mint. I reckon the best returns have been from select base metal issues. The famous $2 red poppy, 2018 $2 reissue set, 2013 $2 Purple coronation come to mind. These coins/sets could be purchased for a moderate amount above face value but are now worth many times that in a relatively short period. Add in mint-marked carded specimens and the price jumps further. A similar example could be the Kew 50p now worth 100x face value. Would be interest to know of bullion coin buyers who have made similar gains on purchase value within 5-10 years.

david bullion stacking is not to collect the coins some serious investor like to have a set of date runs, so sometimes particular dates might all of sudden increase in value e.g 1988 silver 2 dollar, but then again mars 2 dollar coin its even more insane price increase.

some of the earlier lunar series in silver increase in value multiples x5-x4 in short time due in part also to the Iraq and Afghan war

ill say the worst collecting investment in part due to inflation as well and very low demand are the 5 dollar coins exchanged at the CBA (draws full of this stuff) I think at the time people can't even use them in regular circulation, and anyone buying them for above face :S good luck to you.

That's sort of my point. Insane prices you mention are not because the price of bullion has gone up to insane levels but because the the particular coin or series has become collectable. Are you referring to the 2017 Planetary set when you say the $2 Mars coin? If so, they are all base metal rather than bullion. Maybe coin stacking would be a better term than bullion stacking. If the 2017 planetary set (or individual Mars coin) has reached more insane prices than the 1988 $2 silver, doesn't that imply that the better profit was made by a base metal coin rather than a bullion coin?
Yes the $5 coins never increased in value but I expect you can still exchange them at banks. I do have those but I paid around face value for them. Probably still a better investment than all the bullion purchased from the Franklin Mint.

I apologize. This topic should have probably have gone in the NCLT subforum. I collect silver and gold bullion just for the weight. But I also like to have a date set of certain series too. For example, I love the Koala series. But if I want to get the early koala, I would have to pay twice as much for a 2006 Koala than a 2022 Koala. Some of the older bullion coins can become semi-nusmismatic collectibles or even full-blown collectibles. So I was wondering if the Wombat and Quokka bullion coins are going to be new yearly releases. I can get in on the ground floor because these series are just starting, if true. The Australian mints make a lot of nice bullion coins. I wouldn't have minded to have complete dates sets of kangaroos, koalas, kookaburras, wedge-tailed hawks, dolphins, lunars, etc. But the back issues are too expensive now.
