It seems like a lot of sellers feel 'threatened' by the prospect of a return. Doesn't make much sense to me if you're an honest seller, especially since you'll make more money. The only valid time I can see is if it's something like bullion where the prices fluctuate a lot and some idiot might return because they get cold feet.

I used to sell most of the items I sold on ebay "as is"...I gave a very honest and accurate description. After the listing, packing, posting, I didn't want somebody to decide it wasn't really what they wanted. Pictures were good and description was honest. Buy it or don't but I didn't want to be bothered with someones buyers remorse. I had no negative feedback and very little negative communication with over 200 sales.

Also,a buyer could send a coin of lesser grade back to the seller and then want a refund...Ive seen it happen!

The way to protect against that is to take high resolution photos, I simply won't buy without a return policy unless its cheap because...

Even good photos can easily hide cleaning and whatnot. This has happened to me before.

I will sell a very few coins "as is," but only ones where I've made certain to note in the description that the coin itself is a 'details' coin and is being sold only as 'genuine.' I always post very large, well-lighted unenhanced photos of every coin I sell. I offer returns on 'as-is' listings only in the case of a coin turning out not to be genuine. On all other listings I accept returns without question.

Being an antique dealer - but not a coin dealer. I run into the 'as is' all the time and I don't mind. When I see it, the seller is informing me that there are 'problems' with the item, so inspect carefully. I don't like it when I find an item that has problems and it is not mentioned.
As for grading, truly subjective. I have posted pics here where I get grades from Fine to AU. Go figure. And I thought it was MS-70!
