I need the grade on this buf. How would a top TPG grade this in light of the darkened patina? Also, many new collectors like I was back in the day would take it down a grade from G-4, for example, and then call it AG-3 details. When really it should have been called a G-4 details. As long as everyone agrees with this, take it away.

If warranted via a higher grade, I could easily scape off the white residue with a porcuppine quill or toothpick maintaining the integrity of the patina.
Would removing this stuff have any effect on increasing the grade?

Impossible to grade from these images. Start with a good acetone soak.

VF35 Details, ED. This would not be a candidate for a net grade, IMO. This will be vague without an example image, but I'll try. For me, net grading comes into play in the "grey area", if you will. Anything beyond market acceptable circulation wear, that is not quite heinous enough to warranty a "details" designation. A heavier than average, distracting hit, but has toned over and does not look intentional, might warrant a net grade down a point. In the case of Buffalo nickels, they are prone to verdigris and corrosion. I've got example with a small spot of "stabilized" corrosion (maybe twice the size of a mintmark) that I would net down a grade, but would not consider calling it "details, ED". This is all VERY subjective though. What one person may find unattractive, another may find acceptable. My 2 cents, the way I approach it, and different than the old school approach of netting just about anything and everything.

There's nothing to net here . Netting to me means like lets say the obverse is VG-10 and the reverse is VF-30 then I would net it at F-15 . But in this case both sides of coin is virtually the same grade . I would agree to give it an acetone soak and see what happens .

Improved, I'll bump mine to XF40 Details. Still can't get the greatest feel for the surfaces.

Quote: ...XF40 Details So I assume that these often-encountered darkened patina Bufs. are not detailed unless some other aberration like the rough field patina at 3 - 5 on the obverse is prevalent?. Is your particular detail tag based upon some other characteristic besides the questionable fields? IMO the overall field condition is decent for 95% of the fields and worthy of a grade of at least F-15 or even much more; that's assuming the dark color does not pull the grade lower from a detail designation etc.
