It would be worth it in cases like that to sign up for a sniping program. I personally use auctionstealer, but everyone has their favorite. I don't always win my item, but I am never tempted to overbid on ebay anymore.

From what I have seen on ebay, The high quality coins often sell at discounted prices. It is the junk silver coins that seem to always command a 15% or higher premium over their melt value.

Not a bad idea Halfa'. I'll keep that in mind.I also seem to recall you can set up cell phone or other personal devise notifications pertaining to your bidding interests. I also wonder why the junk silver seems to cause the frenzy. For 22 bucks, man..what a deal, thats the cost of the certification, se they basically got the coins for free. I looked at other ebay items from this seller an 99.999999999% of them are buy it now.

On another note, for those of you within the GTA, I just went to a dealer who I haven't visitied in approx 1 year, this afternoon with the intent of finding a 1949 1 cent 'A points to denticles' variety, and low and behold I found in his display case a $20 RCM piece I always wanted but couldn't justify the cost, considering the item originally listed for 58 bucks and now dealers are selling it for $129.00. The 1996 Avro Arrow Aviation Series Coin. The kicker was he had an $89.00 tag on it, then without me even asking, he said Ill sell it to me for $75. THE DEAL WAS SEALED, right then and there.. If anybody is in Toronto, I encourage you too go there. The owner just told me he bought a complete collection of coins, those there's lots to be had. He normally only specializes in very high grade certified Canadian coins and stamps. He is on O'Connor Drive, Central Stamp and Coin. north of St Clair. Here's a link to Colonial Acres that sells the same coin but appears to be out of stock. http://www.colonialacres.com/cgi-bi...aCF-105Arrow

Nice find Dollar1948! The Avro Arrow and Avro Lancaster coins are the most sought after in the Aviation Series and usually run close to double the price of the other coins.
I signed up for both the Series I and Series II Aviation coins when they were first introduced and have the complete 20 coin collection including all the metal display cases.

Man o man Hawk, very nice, I'd love to own the whole set. I can;t believe it, I saw a Lancaster coin there as well,,,hmmm. The one you say is in great demand, is it the 1990 Avro Lancaster? Whats the big popularity with the Lancaster anyway...wasn't it manufactured in Great Britain? Ill have to go back and see which one I saw.

I think it has to do with the fact that a lot of RCAF guys flew Lancs during the War.

Sorry you didn't have a good experiance there malissadawn. I get the impression this guy's 'forte'is stamps and he really doesn't have the same knowledge base for the coins. He really seems to have alot of high grade certifide coins, the kind of inventory that is very cut and dry as far as prices go. (Maybe a little wheeling and dealing if you buy a few collectively).I took some lower grade silver Canadian silver 5 and 10 cent pieces in there about 6 months ago, and asked him if he wanted to trade or buy, and he was interested in the least. I may have just caught him at the right time, now I'm contemplating going back tomorrow to see if I can score that Lancaster Bomber coin at the same price. Your welcome to check it out yourself by all means, if your interested in that coin as well. Yesterday when I was there, I saw him sell approx 10 Prooflike sets from the 70's and early to mid 80's to an Asian guy for 20 bucks.A good deal right then and there. After this customer left, I asked him if he checked out for the various 'yoke'varieties on the 74 nickel dollar, and he initally gave me a blank stare, then told me yes he did, as he turned away. At the very least why don't you give him another shot, maybe you caught him on a bad day, and perhaps he's got alot of uncertified inventory or RCM boxed stuff he may not know how to handle properly.

Final Follow-up. Well, I went back to to this dealer, and I was right...he did have the Lancaster bomber version of this aviation commerative. I think he must have done some research, as he had a $179 stickers on it..YIKES!! When I said, 'man, I didn;t you had this here. he said you can have it for $129. Thats exactly what Charlton has it listed for. I would have got it but I'm feeling the crunch of the economy as well, and when I look back a this whole scenerio, it was the Avro Arrow coin I always wanted and finally got cheap, and the Lancaster coin was just potential cheap buy. On a final note, Id love to know anyone in these forums has the entire aviation series, if so, I really envy you. I just love them.

Hi Dollar1948, sorry to hear that your dealer got wise and jacked up his price on the Lancaster. That seems to happen a lot when the seller knows you're interested in a specific item.
Regarding the popularity of the Avro coins, I think WpgLwr got it right on the money with the Lancaster Bomber, and I'm pretty sure that the Arrow is popular because of all the controversy associated with it's eventual demise even though it was one of the most advanced fighters of it's time.
I've had good experience in the past with Beechwood Coin and Stamps (located at Dr. Fleas Flea Market), you could always try there to see what they have.

hi again dollar1948,
how he jacked up the price was part of the reason that I didn't enjoy his store. Also when I went I was shopping for specific years and coins for a gift (that I wrote about on this forum as I made it, wish I could find the link to show you it) He offered me lower quality goods for higher prices which I then carefully went through his inventory and saw that he had higher grades of the same coins for cheaper prices. Also what bothered me ( aside from $80 in cabs to get there and back lol) was that I am by no means an expert in numismatics so when I shop I am also looking for any education I could get. Every question I asked him that day he gave the same answer which was I dont know.
If you are ever really looking for good deals, an honest dealer and someone who will give you discounts just for being a return customer try Taylor's Coins I can give you the address and phone number if you ever want to check it out. He is too far for me to ever visit now that I moved and since him I have never found another dealer that compared. (been looking for over a year now and visited many, many stores.
sorry for going way off topic here. If you enjoyed his store I am very happy for you. Maybe given another visit or 2 he could have grown on me but I wasn't interested in trying that theory out.

Thanks Malissa, I know Taylor Coins well, I would say 1/3 of my collection is from there. I do like that dealer tremendiously, and Avenue Road and Eglinton is a nice drive for a Saturday morning. Sometimes I like to spread out and see what else is out there as well. I really stumbled across my latest acquisition at Central by accident as I only went in there to get some supplies and no coins. This shop will never replace my regular dealer (taylor_ as I have developed a nice rapport with them
