I have acquired a few coins from ebay that are in PCGS true 1st generation holders. They're smaller than the newer holders and the coin rattles inside them. Do these holders have some kind of value, or enough value that I shouldn't have them reholdered? Thanks for any comments.

Overall, it is felt that coins in these holders will crossover to a higher grade and have been therefore sought after for crack-out and resubmission to PCGS.

Personally, I believe (as I always have) that you should consider the coin and not the slab when buying. I have seen more coins in the current PCGS holders that I felt were overgraded than I have in the old holders. We all know that the standards are becoming more lax, though, so it makes sense that these coins are now being graded higher when they're resubmitted.

the hoilder you are refering to is refered to the "Clacker" holder and I just submitted 30 to NGC for crossover. I also buy the coin inside not the slab but alot on ebay seem to go crazy over old green holders of any kind thinking that just because its in one it will upgrade which is definately not the case. Some will some wont but most of the ones that would upgrade have already been sent in to do so. But all it is is the first generation holder PCGS used and I dont really likem cause they dont fit in my pcgs hard plastic boxes lol they flop around like a fish out of water in there
Rest in Peace

The term I hear used most often for these cases is "rattlers"(I've had dozens of these over the years) because the coins rattle in the holders. Many sellers would have you believe that the coins will grade out higher if re-submitted. I don't really think this is always true.

As Susan has already stated, many coins are now graded less stringently than they used to be. This information tends to make money for the TPG'S and the theory applies to other TPG's "older" slabbed coins as well. Mike
