I think that once a particular coin type becomes rare in circulation, you tend to find a higher proportion of that type of coin in circulation in nice condition. I noticed this with the George VI 50% silver shillings and florins in England in the 1980s. By 1980, with the huge increase in the value of silver, virtually all the yellowish, well-circulated ones had been pulled from circulation. But specimens in EF or AU condition, retrieved from cookie jars or found down sofas, would stay in circulation longer as they didn't stand out as 'old' coins.
