I am in awe of the ridiculous bids placed on the 2017 twoonie at my local auctions. The coin is by itself and opening bid is 5.00. The first auction I looked at it went for 37.00 for final price. a little over a month later another went for 31.00. Geez...I think I might just crack my rolls and sell these individually. They were not even in a 2x2 and were obviously circulated. Anyone else see these crazy prices for these twoonies?

Okie! They are not ugly!

:-)

Some colourized coins get quite good prices because people don't see them in circulation. It is, as Okie pointed, lack of education/information. But this is valid for many other coins - prices are driven more because of hoopla than because of real scarcity. Take for example the 1948 dollar - not a rare coin at all and yet it sells for a truckload of money. Other examples abound.

The mintage is low, and many toonie hunters are taking them out of circulation. My estimate is that circulated examples are a maximum of a few dollars over face. Still, I don't know why some are selling them for crazy prices. Some people just don't know a reliable value resource.

'uneducated' or not, a coin is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.....as with all things.

Congrats on your auction! The results are not all that surprising as these take some work to find. Maybe start with a higher price next time?
