Hi all,

long story short, I bought an auction lot of silver coins yesterday and proceeded to identify them all well in to the night. Of those 11 coins, one is certainly a fake and made me really start to worry. However, I am now happy with all but three of which two are "Alexanders". Unfortunately, these are outside my normal field and I'm having trouble really nailing them down. Can any of you help with date, mint or any other details on these two?

Thanks in advance.

....Outside of my collecting area but neither look authentic to me.....I'll be interested in others thoughts.
Size and weight would really help?

Hi Paul,

the first is 2.9g nd measures 18mm at the widest point down to 16mm. It is very high relief.

The second is 3.1g and measures 16 to 16.2mm across.

They are certainly smaller and lighter than a drachm. There is some material loss which may account for the differences? I've resorted to going through images on Wildwinds and CoinArchives - the closest match I have found is a drachm minted in Kolophon. That is a drachm at 17mm and 4.2g but the elements of the obverse are very similar. Does that provide any clues?

the first is a hemidrachm of Philippos and maybe a barbarous imitation or a cast copy as Bob says. Impossible to be sure with a photo. The reverse looks very barbarous. albert

Not my area, but the first looks to be a barbarous issue. However, I agree with Bob they both look cast. Soft details and clear casting bubbles and casting seam (lower left) on the second coin.
