Need to choose 4 commemorative half dollars, and I want them to be meaningful. I am thinking maybe the first one of each era (1892 Columbian and 1982 Washington), then maybe the 1926 Sesquicentennial and wait for the 2026 Semiquincentennial, Any other ideas?

Here is what I temporarily have:

That is a good idea, I went for: 1893 Columbian Expo, 1926 Oregon Trail, 1926 Sesquicentennial, and then 1982 George Washington (the 1982 GW is a proof addition)

Not sure there is any wrong way to do it...except maybe four of the same coin would be odd. 4 favorite designs, 4 nicest coins, 4 local(ish) coins, 4 matched designs (like eagles), or 4 like you suggest (sort of a timeline) all seem reasonable. My favorite choice is the 4 coins I just happen to already have.
