I just picked this one up a couple of days ago. Are these copper 19th century Victorian farthings especially rare? It just seems that I see so few of these compared to the later, bronze ones. Also, I just want a bit of a second opinion about this coin. So how would you guys grade it and what value would you place on it? Thanks!

P. S. Those white speckles and such are actually not on the coin. I guess I need to dust my scanner. haha

Looks like a nice XF example. This series is not all that scarce, though high grade examples are tough to come by. As far as the practical value, it would sell on ebay in a wide range starting at about 50% of the book value up to 150%. Really depends if the Brits jump on it or not. =)

Numismat- Really, you think this is an EF? hmmm, I was thinking that it was more around a VF30, but I would be happy to be wrong in this instance.

Archaz, VF-30 would be very conservative. These coins are easily worn, and I've seen examples such as this with rim dings still selling in the EF value range and sometimes beyond. Your coin, with a good rim and fairly un-marred surface may actually grade as a gEF because most of Victoria's eyebrow is visible and the seated britania on the back has a full rim on the helm, perfect rose at the bottom, full fingers gripping the trident, and the overlapping folds of the dress over the shield show minimal signs of wear.
Very nice example.

It's not an EF in the system we have - possibly a strong VF..but solid, and collection-worthy.
