Some coin proposals are heavily scrutinized in Committee Hearings, and are subject to a fair bit of questioning as to their purpose, significance, sponsors, cost to the Government, etc. And then there is the type of Hearing enjoyed by the Iowa Statehood Centennial half dollar bill.
The Iowa half dollar was included in the Hearing that also featured the Booker T. Washington commemorative half dollar proposal and the coin bills seeking half dollars to honor Will Rogers. It was second on the agenda after the discussions regarding the Booker T. Washington half dollar.
When it came time for the Iowa to be discussed, Representative Chauncey William Reed (R-IL) moved that the Iowa bill be favorably reported. Representative Robert Kirkland Henry (R-WI) was quick to second the motion. The Committee Chairman, Compton Ignatius White (D-ID), called for discussion, but Mr. Reed was the only Committee member to comment, and he simply stated that "The bill comes within the policy of this committee."
Chairman White then called for a vote, and received a unanimous "Aye." White then stated that the Committee would move on to "other business" - namely, the two bills calling for half dollars to commemorate the life of Will Rogers. After being reported back by the Committee, the Iowa Statehood Centennial bill passed each chamber of Congress without debate, and was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman without objection. Short and sweet!
Some coin proposals definitely "lived a charmed life."
