I've just been crawling through my coin database, updating it. I'm up to Hawaii, and I'm just curious...

As the only state in the Union to issue it's own coinage prior to joining the US, where do Hawaiian coins fit on the lite/grey/dark scale? Do US collectors consider them as legit US coins?

I have two genuine Hawaiians (that's not counting the "tourist dollars") - a dime my dad bought for me from a little coin shop somewhere on the Big Island...

...and a quarter I picked up at a coin shop on the Gold Coast...

I consider them US coinage. They are in the Red Book.

It looks like both of your Hawaiian coins are in very nice condition. There is a pretty good collector market for these and Hawaiian coinage commands a nice collector premium.

Judging from the pics you posted, I'd say your dime is probably in F/VF condition (a lot depends upon the obverse) and would be worth around $60-100. I'd say the same about the quarter which would put the value of that between $65-90.
Rest in Peace

Nice coins.

A Hawaiian coin is something I don't have in my collection, but am often watching for one I can afford.

I believe they're both dated 1883. According to the Red Book, the cent was minted in 1847, the five cents in 1881, and the eighth, quarter, half, and dollar in 1883. There are also various tokens mentioned.

Yup, both are 1883:

The pics are all scans, through the 2x2 (except the dime obverse; that's raw). Dad bought the dime for US$60 in the late 80's, I think, graded VG on the 2x2. The quarter I paid AU$35 for in '97, graded Fine.

Hawaiian coinage is very tough to find and very pricey here in the U.S. regarless of condition. Seldom ever see any in local shops and if you do, well they are gone pretty darn quick! I don't particularly consider them U.S. coinage as honestly they are not! But would be glad to add them to my U.S. collection! Really great so see someone here has a few!

I must say I like the quarter.

Sap on a slight side note, do you like shopping at the gold coast coin shop?

KLD: Haven't been there since - don't get down the coast much. Not sure it's still there.
