I came across this light (not a ring flash)... any thoughts on using for coins (see bottom of auction for cool pics)?

I Have one for my Sony DSC-F828 and to be honest I get better results using external light sources. it just does not illuminate the target at close range. To get full illumination in the center you need to be about 18 inches from the target. With an external halogen I can focus about 5 inches away.

I believe it'll tend to wash out luster, although you can probably get nice, contrasty pics with it. Luster likes directional light, from no more than one or two directions.

That said, I've never tried a ring light, although I've used circular fluorescents which completely killed luster but are good for black/white Proofs. I'm toying with a design for a circular LED set where the individual lights can be switched, just to see what it'd do.

The color temperature indicated in the ebay auction has to be wrong - 3000k is very, very yellow and would require serious white balance adjustment. "Soft White" standard household lighting is about 4200k, and Daylight is in the 5000-6000k range.
