I just viewed an image link by Kurt in a recent post. It was an EXTREMELY good image and without many words very informative for many, many members.

This started me thinking that these images could have a place of their own within CCF
(forgive me if this subject has been previously discussed or is here somewhere and I missed it)

I think we have all at some point gone to site after site to get a good image of a known variety to learn about it and try to find them.

It would be simple to have a separate forum section for all of these images. Someone could post the title of whatever the variety is (for example 1982 snowman Lincoln Cent) and then members can post their best images or links for that particular variety. Then these images would be all in the variety image forum to be easily searched for.

This may be a little more organized and productive then someone making a post and asking/hoping for pictures.

I was thinking along the lines of either in the coin forum main page of categories or even as a side link under coin facts?

COIN FORUM
US COIN IMAGE GALLERY
COIN VARIETY GALLERY
US COMMEMORATIVE HISTORY
US COIN FACTS

Then when you click the link there it also gives you choice of country?

Just an idea that I had. thank you for reading :)

I think that what you are saying is a great Idea to have a reference forum of different types of varieties for specific types of coins for both US and world coins. It would work if enough members got together to contribute time and quality photo to this effort. Kurt is doing a great job on the world coins part of it and could grow even more if people submitted more coin to his forum page. Sorry Kurt don't mean to give you more work. Since over time I sold most of my US coins I am only collecting Icelandic coins right now I don't have much to contribute except my enthusiasm.

I agree that CopperCoins did a great job photographing the differences between 1982 obverse types.
For world coins, it's a slow and steady process to build a gallery. Given the huge number of world varieties, it will never be an exhaustive reference by country, but we may get a good representation of collector's interests. I have many more to post in the near future.

Similarly, A US variety gallery would be an interesting but incomplete reference because we would have to link out to so many external sites, which may or may not be maintained over time. Content of linked sites would be a consideration too. Many varieties are simply too scarce to own and take our own photos, and using external pics on this forum runs into copyright/permissions issues. This is why I only host photos taken by collectors of their coins.

--Just a few thoughts, but by no means exhaustive. I like the idea US version of my world gallery, provided someone has the time to build and manage it.
