Questions About The Canadian 20 For 20, 50 For 50, Etc Canadian Coins

Wrekkdd Pillar of the Community Canada 3328 Posts	Posted 07/03/2022 10:17 am So over the weekend I stopped in at a flea market sort of thing and one of the vendors had several of the Canadian $ for $ commemorative coins. Each coin was out of its capsule and in a 2×2. The coins were priced basically the same as they would be online at around 53$ for the 50$ coin etc, after taking a look at them I noticed they all looked like the rim had Ben shaved down a little. I doubt I would ever buy one of these unless it had full packaging but my question is has anyone seen this before? Would someone buy these, shave a couple grams of silver off them then re sell them for the same price? I know this was an issue in the past when bullion coins were basically worth there face value in bullion as you could take some if the gold or silver and then re spend them at there face value. Is this a problem today? Other then this specific series I'm not aware of any modern coins anywhere where the face value is about the metal value so it's just a weird thought, but these coins were definitely all missing some metal on the rims. * Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. * Report this Post to the Staff

It could be a counterfeiting production issue. Taking the time to file off a few cents worth of silver on a coin that doesn't/never did widely circulate doesn't seem like a worthwhile pursuit. Hundreds of the coins would be needed to make just a few dollars. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved. Report this Post to the Staff
