There was no small and large dates in 1972, they are all the same.
Maybe your thinking of either 1970 or 1974.
The only other years that you find both are 1960 and 1982.

What/where were you reading about a 72 cent with large and small,letters? This is the first we are hearing about it. 82, yes, 72 no.
