I found this in my back yard close to where the bullet shell was. It looks very similiar to many different military and navy emblems but after searching yahoo google and ebay I decided to ask for help. If you can give me ANY information on this whatsoever id be very grateful. Its only about an inch tall and mayb a half inch wide. It looks to be pretty old. The civil war did come through here and actually completely destroyed the city about 4 blocks from me In 1862. So do you think its from then? Anything you might know about this piece would be greatly appreciated...

I did a Google search for US Navy insignia and came up with this pic of a book on naval insignia that has an image that looks like a modernized design based on what you found (look in the lower right corner). It looks like it was a rank insignia of some kind.

Petty officer 3rd class. Both US Coast Guard and Navy use this rank and insignia.

They would wear it on their Dress Unniform (Class A or B)

I came with the same answer Jayson has, except that wikipedia says two cheverons mean PO 2nd class:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petty_...Second_Class

I'm not familiar to US ranking, that's only net search. Which one is it Jayson?

You are right, it is 2nd class. My hands were typing faster than my brain was processing.

Sorry for the confusion.

Fascinating fine. The crossed anchors mean the wearer was also a qualified boatswain. If you look here http://freepages.military.rootsweb....s/index.html about half way down the page you can see a similar shoulder patch for a 1st class PO boatswain.
