How do you know if one is legit? I saw some awesome Lincoln ones and a cool Jackson one in my coin book.

They just look neat.

No token love? Does anybody collect these or know about them?

I would love advice on a reputable seller.

Some info,

One of the factors that defines a Civil War token is that it is a piece that was minted from 1861 to 1864. The year 1861 marked the beginning of the war, and in 1864 Congress enacted legislation that outlawed the used of such tokens in place of U.S. coinage.

I've seen some of these in the Red Book. I like the one with the hog on the reverse. The local dealer had one this weekend but it was pretty beat up.

The various tokens with the hog/boar motif are Hard Times tokens, not Civil War tokens. HTTs usually have biting political satire(Jackson was a frequent target) or they advertise a business and are the same size as a large cent. Civil War tokens can also advertise businesses(store cards) but many had patriotic slogans supporting the Union effort and they were the same size and composition as the copper nickel Indian Head cents. I have no clue about the one in the original ebay link as I have never seen that one, it is definitely not of the patriotic variety, I guess it advertises for a traveling show?

The Yankee Robinson token is a Civil War Store Card, probably OH 165 EZ-1a, in approximately VF.

The buyer got a nice deal, considering they also won a VF large cent.. : )

You might want to check out the new Civil War Token Club on coinzip.com, Sunday evenings from 7-9 PM. EST.
