I've seen a lot about not using PVC to store coins. Why is it bad and what does it do to the coin? Also are some of my older coins stored in the plastic/cardboard at risk?

You might check this thread or find others using the search option in the bar above.

The ones in the hard Plastic, or the cardboard/mylar holders should be OK as PVC damage does not come from these components. However general storage concerning moisture and envirnomental chemicals still could cause general corrosion.
There are many threads on holders, corrosion, toning, dipping, etc that you might also search that are related to your question.

I too suggest you spend a little time on the search thing at the top. And don't just try PVC, also try cleaning coins, Acetone and other subjcets. That PVC stuff comes up a real lot here.
