Pulled this out of a bulk lot long ago. It spent several years in the garbage box until one day I got bored and realized it wasn't damaged.

That's an interesting coin! I almost looks struck through something because the eagle and letters are softer within that region.
Or perhaps a lamination dropped away after the strike? Ideas?

hmm.... would a peeled-off lamination leave such weak strikes? I think it's a piece of wood or another shard of metal or something like that.

I thought it was a strike through, but it was identified as a lamination many years ago by the man who literally wrote the book on errors. Alan Herbert(Price Guide to Mint Errors).

i would say it;s a lamination looks like it. The reason why it looks like a chunk of wood because of the color of the coin

Just for the sake of conversation, I took a detail of the coin and highlighted a few areas I found interesting, such as:
> the indentations oblique to the main direction of the indentation
> the termination of the indentation before the edge of the coin.
