For a short time I was a calligraphist, many years ago.
In most scripts, the area enclosed under the top horizontal curve of the 'S' is less than the area enclosed above the bottom horizontal curve. Psychological I guess, but the 'S' is usually depicted this way, to visual balance to the character.
