1957 proof cameo Franklyn Half dollar

1957 was mostly uneventful for New Zealand, with just the 5 lower coins issued. You have to wait until 1953 to see a Florin or Halfcrown again and then 1951 for regular issues.



The only difference was there were 2 sixpences. One is the strapless type. These coins have the poorly rendered portrait of the Queen with flat hair detail and no shoulder definition. These appeared on NZ coins from 1953 to 1955 and in 1956 they changed to the "strapped" type. Britain changed to this in 1953 and Canada halfway through 1953 (Their coins are "shoulder lines" and no shoulder lines). Australia also switched fast, but us here in little old New Zealand, no one noticed but the coin appreciation fraternity of course


Notice the lack of "Shoulder straps" - Compare to the 3d coin below.

Funnily strapless coins exist in 1956 for the 1d (Rare) and 3d (Scarce), yet for the 6d it is 1957! It must be they used old dies at The Royal Mint when it came to striking 1957 sixpences, but they realised fast and only 200k of the 2.4 million 6d issued in 1957 are strapless ones.


3d uncirculated, this has a "Strapped" portrait to compare with the 6d above.

Australia in 1957 issued it all except halfpennies, which were on hiatus in 1956 - 1958.
