Finally we have reached 1946 and the age of silver again!  The change to cupronickel was very abrupt and not announced until mid 1947, so in 1946 it was silver business as usual. As expected being the last year of it, VF/EF coins are quite easy to find, but so are the usual VG ones too. Here I give you a nice mix of EF and near EF ones. None of these are outstandingly scarce. Good supplies were minted for the expected post war boom, except food shortages and the devastation of WW2 ensured it was miserable and there was little to spend these shiny silver pieces on. Numbers minted of all coins was slightly lower than 1947, but apart from 1943 and 1945 the highest since the mid 1930s.  We had 2 types of florin, the common round back with thinner rim and less detail on the kiwi's body and flat back which had a wider rim and more detail. The latter was a similar style to 1947 and later coins and former like 1945 and earlier. the flatback is scarce (est 300k) next to roundback (1.2 million). Both coins are good VF.  Obverses of all the coins in shiny silver and average bronze. |

I knew about the backs, but wasn't aware of the narrow and wide rims.

Australia in 1946 on the other hand had a slower year after the jumbo coin issuing of 1942/45. Because of the war they finally reduced from sterling silver (92.5%) down to half (50%) silver. So 1946 is the only year NZ and Aus coins had the same silver content!  No 3ds were minted and the penny (Melbourne) only is very scarce. The Halfpenny was a Perth only issue. Florins were plentiful along with the sixpences and Melbourne shilling.  2 types of shilling were minted, the common Melbourne shilling (11 million) and a Perth one, which had a dot before the S in SHILLING. This coin is more scarce (1.3 million) and collectible. My group are average except the usual blingy Florin I can show you!  This one is not quite as nice as yesterday but I grade it AU/virt UNC.  Starting tomorrow, Australian coins become sterling silver!  |
