Australia in 1942 saw coins minted by San Francisco and Denver as the war opened on the Pacific front.  High Grade Melbourne Florin and lower grade San Fran one  Shillings of Melbourne and San Fran, a Denver 6d and Denver adn San Fran 3d, the Melbourne 3d of 1942 is scarce. I only have a Perth penny and there were also Bombay pennies and halfpence. I have none of the halfpence, Bombay, Melbourne and Perth. |

1942 UK set - once again no penny:  Close-up of halfcrown whowing typical toning and wear of a 50% silver coin:  But mainland Europe had Nazi occupation and zinc and aluminium coins, like this French franc:  Dutch 5 cenrs:  Denmark 25 ore:  Norway 50 ore:  Neutral Portugal still had silver 5 Escudo coins:  Indonesia 1 cent:  British Guyana 4 pence:  Newfoundland 5 cents:  Ireland 6 pence:  Edited by NumisRob

1942, New Zealand, 1 Florin.  The 1942 florin is the second rarest King George V piece, with a mintage of only 150,000! Beaten narrowly by the 1944 piece which had a mintage of 140,000. I believe this coin is the lowest mintage, non-commemerative circulating coin in my collection. |

Another great group NumisRob, the penny drought of the early 1940s was interesting as it was full steam ahead with Halfpence and farthings! My British better coins for 1942 - The Halfcrown escaped much wear.   It pretty much has none - this is beautiful!   The Florin is also uncirculated. Compared to NZ coins of 1942, these two were cheap and much nicer to get. Less UNC is my Irish Florin from 1942   It has a more VF vibe going on, its paler as the Irish used 75% silver instead of half. The rest of my 1942 UK is MEH! to avearge - so you will all be spared it for now. |

Fiji had been issuing coins since 1934, but quantities most years had been small and none at all in 1939. 1942 saw a big change with big numbers of coins coming out of the USA. San Francisco minted everything from the brass halfpence and pennies to the silver sixpences, shillings and florins. These silver pieces were 90% instead of 50% as well. As many as 1 million pennies were minted in 1942 and 1943 and 250k Florins, meaning you can buy nice ones really cheap (See our Fijian thread in the Australasian section if you want to know more). Me being the kea and magpie (Birds attracted to shiny things) of course goes wild.   Halfpenny (near EF, weak strike)   Penny (gVF, weak strike)   Sixpence (VF)   Shilling (EF)   Florin (AU) Interestingly Fiji also issued banknotes for 1 penny, 1 and 2 shillings as the threat of Japan loomed. Some hotels even issued 1d, 3d, 6d and 1/- chits as currency! Not until 1934 will we seen a complete year again from me. Edited by Princetane

Totty, great example of the 1942 - its a hard coin to get! Yours looks UNC but its hard to accurately grade very high grade ones (Mine is a bare EF). However one correction, its the 3rd rarest Florin, the 1963 Florin had just 100,000 minted, but because its very late and only cupronickel - its value is only a few dollars UNC and maybe $1 in VF condition. Also many people hoarded them when they found out it was rare. The 1942 and 1944 on the other hand are very collectible in high grade - but not quite as high as 1936 - that coin in very high grades can be as much as $10,000.
