1927 was a transition year for British coins. The good King George had just had his head modified, and a new series of reverses was being introduced. For the bronze coins these involved a slightly smaller figure of Britannia, but for the silver coins there was a radical redesign - and the first crown of the reign!

Here are the standard coins. No threepences or florins were issued for circulation:






The 1927 penny is a one-year-type as it has the smaller version of Britannia coupled with the large Modified Effigy. The portrait of George V was reduced in size on the halfpenny and penny in 1928 to counteract ghosting.

Here are the new silver coins designed by George Kruger Gray, who also designed numerous Commonwealth and Colonial coins. Only the new-style shilling was issued for circulation in 1927: the other coins were issued only as proofs, although some, like my halfcrown, escaped into circulation::
