Many well-used but beautiful coins here!  That giorgino from Modena fascinates me, can't stop looking at it. There is something special about being able to mint coins with the family's own saint on them!  |

Grand Duchy of Tuscany 1738 double giulio, Florence mint for Pisa. I acquired this coin for the portrait of Francis II of Lorraine, who, through a sort of strange royal-musical-chairs following the Polish succession crisis, went from Duke of Lorraine (where his portrait coins are rare and too expensive for me) to Grand Duke of Tuscany, to consort of Maria Teresa, and finally Holy Roman Emperor. 1734 Dukaton or "Zilveren Rijder" province of Holland (Delm. 1014) rescued from the wrecked VOC ship 't Vliegend Hert 't Vliegend Hert (perhaps named after the largest beatle species in the Netherlands? but hert could also mean heart => flying heart) was built in 1729. She sailed a couple times from Holland to the East-Indies (Indonesia) and back. Her last trip started in the harbour of Rammekens on the 17th of february 1735. The first day it hit a sand bank in the North Sea at Knokke, Belgium, 18 km from Vlissingen (51°30.8242 N, 03°7.8242 E). Everyone of the crew perished. 't Vliegend Hert was accompanied by a second ship, Anna Catharina, which also perished; the wreck of Anna Catharina has so far not been recovered.   The wreck of 't Vliegend Hert was discovered in 1981; among the recovered objects was a chest containing 2000 gold ducats and 5000 thaler sized silver pieces, many of them "Zilveren Rijders" in good or splendid state, with no or minimal corrosion by the sea water. Another interesting find were lead containers with intact anchovies, dry tabbacco and drinkable (? - but auctioned) bottles of wine. Indeed, the piece shown here was meant to be used for trade in the far east; but it never made the trip and never circulated. below an image of the money chest in which the gold and silver was stored  Edited by 1c5d7n5m

Beautiful coin and fascinating story, 1c5d7n5m! Now I'm going to spoil everything and post a 1734 British halfpenny with a hole. I've had it since the very earliest days of my coin collection: One day I went to my long-closed LCS to look in the 5p tray, but the tray was almost empty. The coin dealer gave me this coin free from the tray!   |
