Hi all!
I'm from Sacramento, Cali. Born and lived in the central valley all my life from Manteca to Merced to Modesto and now Sacramento.

I delved into coins a bit when I was taking care of my dad following his massive stroke that left him unable to speak and in a wheelchair. He was a big collector of stamps and sports memorabilia and he dabbled a little in coins. I started to look into it then, but never really got into it enough to know and understand much about doubled dies and error coins and what's possibly valuable or not, such as Machine Doubling or Strike Doubling.

I recently ran into major car repair issues, have a limited income and have already dumped a lot into my SUV but something drew me to look at my coins. Then I started seeing video titles "coins you can retire on...heheh, so I thought maybe I could find a few amongst those I have to help pair my car repairs that I need and I think I'm getting hooked along the way.

I always save change in a jar and quarters to try for toys for my grandkids in those claw machines. Well, this time, I began watching videos and was referred to a site for doubled die info and I thought I had a few potential double dies but after looking at the ones listed on a coin webdsite mostly for doubled dies, I realized I can't even begin to see what they are describing even on the images they post.

I was using magnification, but just got a digital microscope and oh boy does it show a lot! Amazing stuff! So the more I look, the more I want to know and learn.

There's a coin show later tis month in my area and I'm planning to go. I want to collect some sets for my grandchildren maybe and myself. I have a couple of coins that are certainly interesting if nothing else so I began to look into finding folks to chat with and see what I can learn from them or even share about what I've learned.

Looking forward to co~in mingling with ya'll!

Welcome to the CCF!!

I was born and raised in the Sacramento area as well. Bought and sold many collections the past few years and went to countless garage sales every Saturday all over the Sacramento area. Now I reside in Texas seeking a college education. There a few good coin shops around, my two particular favorites were Folsom Coins and Currency and Rocklin Coin Shop (look in their junk bins). The Sacramento coin show hasn't been a fantastic show, but there are a few good dealers that like to chat. Most of the inventory is the same from one show to the next.

Don't get too excited, as the coin "get rich quick" scheme is clickbait. If you really want to make money with coins, you will have to be a devoted collector and studier and collect years of knowledge. Buy the book before you buy the coin. If you look at every single coin and think it is a thousand dollar doubled die, then you are looking at the hobby the wrong way.

Other than that, this is a fantastic hobby to get in to, as you are the curator of your own personal museum exhibit. Buy smart, search with knowledge, and never give up!

Thanks for the welcome and for lending your knowledge and experience! I am finding myself to be far more Interested in gaining Knowledge than getting rich quick. Who would have thought there was so much that goes I to the creation of a coin! The more I hear and see about the coin mint process, the more interesting things become although I must say it seems like everyone is uso g a foreign language when talking cointalk with some of the terminology. I wondered if there is a key for common terms used amongst the community. Things like plank, names of coin layers, machine errors vs. mint errors, etc. I'm sure I will learn a lot here and looking forward to it!
