Those machines that suck the air out (food-savers?) will also seal shrink wrap plastic. A quick blast on low at the shrink wrap and you've got a sealed unit... at least until you need to get into the album again . I suppose that could be for extra long storage (or transport.. hmm). Unless you did it on a per-2x2 basis, but then you run the risk of heating the coin itself, even though it's only for an extremely short time. I have 2 huge rolls of shrink wrap, I'm going to eventually try this.

I also have considered shrink wrap until I Googled it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrink_wrapQuote: The most commonly used shrink wrap is polyolefin. It is available in a variety of thicknesses, clarities, strengths and shrink ratios. The two primary films are either crosslinked, or non crosslinked. Other shrink films include PVC and several other compositions. The words PVC and Coins should not be in the same Paragraph

As far as I know, Ziploc®, GLAD®, and all similar reusable storage products contain no PVC. I believe Just Carl actually researched this at one point to confirm it.

Thanks xshift and justcarl, if someone started a topic on toned coins or what not then why try to end it so quick by "directing" others somewhere else. There are pros here too with much experience on this discussions. By the way guys, if you all collect U.S. error coins be aware on ebay. Some people get rich selling fakes out there and ebay allows it to keep on. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...:RTQ:US:1123

I didn't see anything just carl said as an attempt to end the conversation. He was providing information.
He seems to like a conversation around here as much as anyone else. :)

Oh no, disagree all you like. Seriously We love a good debate! I think some of us have been burned before by other forums who summarily dismiss us, or our ideas, or both. So we enter new forums or online communities with a chip on our numismatic shoulder. If you can find it, please refer to my post where I refer to those 'other' forum posters as 'pompous windbags' This place, Coin Community Forum, has nowhere near the same mind-set. If you read through some of the postings here and see the different personalities of the people, you will see those who are experts, those who are new, some are somewhere in between. You'll see very verbose individuals and those who use very few words. But our experts are here to teach, and I, among many, are here to learn. I've learned more here in the last 2-3 months here than the 10-15 years prior. And although I'm sure I've deserved it many times, nobody has YET to call me a maroon just carl was simply trying to point you another resource, is all. The more resources we have, the more knowledgeable we become!

Quote:The food-grade plastic used in Foodsavers and other vacuum seal systems is not the same as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrink_wrap. That stuff should definitely not be used on coins. Maybe yes and maybe no. Remember that without air, Oxygen, moisture, other gasses present, no or very, very little reactions to substances can occur. If plastic rap is used and nothing else can get to the coins, nothing will happen. And note that not all plastic rap products are the same either. As noted I did a lot of research on Zip Lock, other food wrapping plastics, Tupper ware, etc. Some actually in writting that they all know it is against the law to utilize PVC or other dangerous substances in their products. I've contacted many via the internet and on phones as well. Mostly due to having over 100 Whitman Albums in Zip Lock Plastic Bags. A massive problem I see in the usage of items that seal in coins such as that plastic rap is it's probably for ever. If coins are in an album would make it really tuff to turn the pages you know. I still wonder how those vacuum machines would work on a Zip Lock Bag or would they tear them apart.
