Hello all,

I recently purchased a 1000 Wheat Cents from one of our great forum members. I have the pleasure to be able to search through these while I am at work. I have the "Cherry-pickers" guide to rare die varieties - fourth addition - Volume one. I have my trusty old magnifying glass.

Here is the way I am doing it now:

I wrote down all the dates from the book to pull aside to check and I am also trying to keep a record of what dates and how many of each I received in this 1000 penny lot.

I have an Excel spread sheet open to catalog the date, mint mark, and how many of each (I am not marking the grade because I am not that good at grading yet)

For now, I have zip-lock baggies to separate all the 1900's, 10's 20's, 30's, 40's, and 50's

I take one out of the bag...look at the date and mint. If it is one of the dates listed in my book, I take a look at the page from the "cherry-pickers" book and read about it, then look at it through my magnifying glass.

I have 2x2's to put the good finds or questionable finds in for later.

I wish I could have brought my QX5 Microscope to work for some of these small errors.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

While your looking for errors, RPMs are one of the most common errors that you will be able to find. When your looking at the D mint marks look for a coke bottle on the upright of the D, it can be up right or up side down. When you look at the S mint marks look for a pregnant look on the loops, you will see an additional belly on them. After you get them home use your microscope to verify what you have found and you can match them on coppercoins.com
