I have been looking for a reeded edge bust half to add to my type collection and to say they are elusive is an understatement. I spotted this one on the bay and aside from being cleaned, are there any red flags you experts notice? I'm not well versed on the reeded edge variety so any help is appreciated. I'm guessing this would grade F details- cleaned. What do you experts think or can you suggest another source for this type of coin? Thanks for looking!

The scratches and pitting on the obverse would keep me away. The current bid of $65 is probably about the most you'd expect to see for it unless it ends up being some ultra-rare variety.

Yeah, I think you guys are right. I should just wait for a nicer graded example hopefully in the $200 range. My wish list has gotten smaller these days and there is no reason to settle for junk. Problem is that there is only one coin shop near me and that is 25 miles away, so ebay is a convenient alternative but they do have a lot of problem junk!

This coin is not a good buy in my opinion. You should purchase a problem-free coin. These reeded edge halves come cleaned a lot of the time, so it will pay off if you are patient to find an attractive example. Do not settle for substandard coins!

If anyone is interested in studying die cracks, the reeded edge bust halves series would be perfect. They come with all kinds of neat cracks and breaks. Documentation of die varieties aren't well documented, but with enough examples one could keep track themselves!
