Actually, they did. Modern proof, specimen, and Uncirculated Loon coins left the mint with a coating of lacquer on them. I think what we are seeing is the degradation of the lacquer coating on these coins, within the sealed flips shown here.

Thanks for setting us straight SPP. You've informed us before that some loons had been lacquered, just didn't realize how many had. Still a shame that it's happening.

jbuck, ya, split it. Let's see if more collectors have this. Don't know what to call it, "skuzzy loons" doesn't work. Maybe..."deteriorating lacquer on NCLT Loon dollar".
