Anyone have any idea's what this is. I flexed the 2X2 to see if the mylar was stuck, but it wrinkles freely. Tells me it is on the coin. I checked all the others, and found 2 more. All from the top row of a 20 pocket 2X2 page. It looks like lichens or something with my loupe. I guess an acetone bath would be safe. I've got another '87 tucked away in a capsule, so I'll have to dig it up.

I am still convinced that 2x2 is to blame for everything. I have seen enough videos from collectors who kept their coins in 2x2 for a long time and after years the coins deteriorated and if they were UNC before, then after several years of storage they looked in XF and various defects appeared on them.

I don't know Slerk, 2X2's were designed to hold coins. I have many coins in 2X2's from the same stack that are still just fine. I have not seen any video's of what may happen like you say, but I wasn't looking either. I'll check it out. I figured out, or think I might have, what happened to those loons. It involves my cats loose bladder. Enough said. .

Here's the pics from the other night.

There seems to be something spreading on my '87 and '90 proof loons.

I checked my Loons and I can see the same effect (not to the same extent, though) on coins from 1998 to 1991. It seems to affect SP and Proof only. I do not see it on any of my MS or PL.
I also checked same years in original SP sets - no problem there.
My guess it was another mint's experiment with coin washing. Something on the coin is reacting with mylar in 2x2.

Thanks for the feedback mice45. I'm sort of glad it's not just me, but on the other hand not glad if this is happening to a lot of loons. How about some pics?

Did someone say "how about some pics"?

Here are two coins, taken directly from the Coin holders. Both certified at SP-67
1989 & 1990

This has happened to proof coins as well, from 1989 to 1991
Certainly looks like some chemical reaction between the plastic and the coating on the coins.

I don't think that they were that way when graded. Maybe something hokey going on here.

Okie, something hokey is going on here, loons are getting contaminated. That's 3 members with the same problem. My coins went into the 2X2 pristine, as I'm sure upc 239's coins were just fine when they went into the flips. (thanks for the pics upc 239).

Still no closer to figuring anything out, but having more examples eliminates an individual problem.

It seems to be showing up on the early NCLT loons. Could the wash solution vary enough to affect different strikes, or be that different than circulation? Would it not be rinsed off?

We'll figure it out one of these days.

I hope so. Do you want me to split these replies into their own topic? If so, can you suggest a title? The goal would be to attract more outsiders to the discussion when they do Google/Etc. searches. Just a thought.

As above, they didn't leave the mint like that. I would shy away from CoinMart coins; maybe their plastic is bad.

Actually, they did. Modern proof, specimen, and Uncirculated Loon coins left the mint with a coating of lacquer on them. I think what we are seeing is the degradation of the lacquer coating on these coins, within the sealed flips shown here.

Well, I never knew that Roger. I'll just quit commenting on Mint items after 1901.

Thanks for setting us straight SPP. You've informed us before that some loons had been lacquered, just didn't realize how many had. Still a shame that it's happening.

jbuck, ya, split it. Let's see if more collectors have this. Don't know what to call it, "skuzzy loons" doesn't work. Maybe..."deteriorating lacquer on NCLT Loon dollar".

okie, you pop by anytime, your input is always welcome.

Topic split and moved to the NCLT forum. I can move it back if necessary.
