Hello everyone, my names Fred and I'm from Texas in the US. I am very new at this after just buying my first coins a couple weeks ago, and sadly I have learned my lesson about fakes as I received three of them. Ive been immersing myself into all the info about roman coins and have purchased a few from vcoins and yesterday I bought an uncleaned bunch of coins that I am gonna try my hand at cleaning. Any tips or help is greatly appreciated!!!

I would like to collect these also, but I am terrified of fakes. What resource are you using to check your coins please. Welcome also.

jokr, welcome to the Forum! The prevalence of fakes/counterfeits has dissuaded me from getting into the realm of "ancients", because it would require quite a bit of time to become acquainted with that vast field. It's not a task undertaken lightly.
As for buying "uncleaned" ones, I did so a while back as a lark. Yes, they were authentic, and it was fun to clean and then identify them. But it's doubtful that you'll acquire any outstanding specimens that way.

Welcome to CCF. Here you'll find ancient coin collectors and a few sellers who can help guide you. Ancient coins are really interesting and fun to collect. It's a big arena to collect with thousands of years history, coin making, cultures, empires, etc. A lot of collectors choose to concentrate on a certain area such as Greek only, Roman only, Roman Provincial, etc.

Yes there are a lot of ancient fakes. But there are also a lot of modern fake coins too. It's good to learn, buy from reputable well known dealers. Vcoins I think is a good place to buy from, I've heard of a few fakes there and when spotted the seller withdrew the coin or refunded the buyer.

Late Roman bronze coins are plentiful and most are not expensive unless you get into highest grade or rare types. A standard reference book is Late Roman Bronze Coinage by Carson, Hill, Kent. Reprints may be available. Collector/seller Victor Clark is very knowledgeable about late Roman coins and helpful.

Ancient coins found in the ground do need cleaning. Some clean them slowly soaking them in lemon juice, vinegar for weeks or longer, then use soft brushes, etc. There are coin cleaning tools/liquid cleaners you can buy. The goal is to clean off the dirt, encrustation without damaging the original patina. Try not to clean a bronze/copper coin so much that it looks shiny new. That's not good. Have fun!
