This one just seemed like a better date for an error coin. It is not a huge broadstruck coin, nor with a big indent, but between the off date and the double error I figure it's worth keeping.

I like the look of that one, but worry what zinc rot will do to it

Until someone comes up with a vacuum sealed slab process I doubt most any of the error coins showing zinc will last forever. But there is hope, since many of these coins are from twenty years ago and don't show any signs of zinc rot even with wild amounts of zinc exposed.

Very nice coin! I like the split plating in the columns and flow trails to the outside of the letters on the reverse. It gives an idea of how much movement can occur when the retaining collar is missing. I wonder how much heat is generated during a normal strike and would guess that it's more on a broad strike because of the extra movement. Has anyone ever heard any stats about the change in temperature of the planchets during the strike?

I guess I've been lucky in that none of the hundreds of coins with exposed zinc cores, and even a few totally unplated zinc cents and planchets, but they have ever shown any sign of corrosion. I've found coins with zinc rot, but even the few of those I've kept show no signs of progression. I keep my coins in regular cardboard 2X2s and store them on a shelf, so there's nothing special there.

I have had a few coins tone while in my collection, but they were slabbed coins. It makes me wonder if the coins we see with major rot come from fountains, junked car cup holders, ground finds and maybe garage chemical experiments.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
