Hi all, I bought this coin from a trusted seller with coin dealer experience and it was sold as Brilliantly Uncirculated, I did note there were some bag marks and 2 dings on the rim but the photo used still made the coin appeal to me to replace my circulated version. Now that I have the coin in my possession, it appears that the coin has been cleaned as there are excessive hairline scratches across both sides of the coin. The natural aging of the coin is on the outer edge with a cartwheel finish. I feel the coin would of had more toning where I think it's been cleaned and the actual rim has debris/aging in it that isn't consistent with the obverse/reverse. Can I get your opinions on this please, am I overthinking this? Attached is a picture of the coin from the seller and then the coin now that I have received it.

Your last set of photos are best for seeing the scratches. I can see scratches across the fields and devices. Appears cleaned. Sellers photos were a bit misleading for sure.

It's a possible from me.
Looks as though the seller offers 14 days refunds, so if it's troubling and you're in doubt, maybe send it back.
I find it near impossible to tell with silver unless it's in my hand. I turned down a nice coin yesterday for this very reason.

Hairlines don't necessarily mean it's cleaned. It looks like it has some natural luster to me, but it could just be the picture. Seems to have some nice toning so if it was cleaned it was long ago. I think it's a keeper.

Hi all, thanks for the responses. So I've spoken to the seller and as mentioned I can return it, but when I mentioned my reason he said "of course its been cleaned, any coin in BU that old has been cleaned". He didn't say he cleaned it and was very amicable. Is that the opinion on BU coins across the community as this seller is very experienced and I'm not so well versed on that side of things?
In the flesh the hairlines are to off putting unfortunately for me.
Appreciate the responses and rational opinions.

I think it comes down to personal choice really. Some people would be perfectly happy with a cleaned coin sitting in their collection, whereas I probably wouldn't.
I don't get involved with silver that much as buying online doesn't allow me to form an opinion on it in hand. As I mentioned, I turned one down when I got the chance to view it in person because there were far too many hairlines for my liking.
It's a difficult one for sure. If it looks like it has been cleaned, I would expect a seller to at least put a caveat saying "possibly cleaned in the past", as the auction houses often do. But as far as whether classing it as BU goes, others with more experience will probably clarify.

Not sure I buy the sellers comments about 'all' coins of that age in BU having been cleaned. Certainly there could be old cleaning that would be far less obvious than on this coin. I agree with Kipster that it's personal choice and what checks the box for you.

Yeah it definitely comes down to preference, for me whenever I look at the coin I'll always look at what's caused doubt in my mind. Early days I might of kept this coin, but I'm refining my collection and it's not what I was looking for. I have my eye on my newest arrival for my collection, it's on the way.
Thanks again for your opinions and helping come to a decision.

@captaindrake, it does have some nice luster. The main areas with the harilines stop when they meet the luster, which is what caused my initial concern. If it didn't have the harlines I would of kept it, they're more prominent in person. I really wanted this coin, but unfortunately it's not the coin I was after.

@kipster Same, I'm really excited for it. After this coin, I've opted for a graded coin. The coin I've ordered I already have in about BU and it's a proof coin. But this one is graded unlike any other I have seen, I've searched and searched and cannot find another to compare it to. I'll post it once I have it, very excited for it.

Quote: After this coin, I've opted for a graded coin I don't blame you, awallin01. At least with a graded coin there's a certain element of uncertainty removed. On the occasion that a shiny silver (or gold) pops it's head up and I want it, that's how I'd go. You end up paying a premium for it, but if it's a really nice looking coin, it's worth it to me.
