My first inclination is that it's likely plated. The experts will be along to tell you what you have.

What you have there may be a rare error. In 1996 there were some Toonies struck on Loonie stock. A telling sign would be if it is solid or does it appear to have a core like the Toonies do. If it is solid, then it would certainly be worth getting checked out.

A loonie is 7 grams back then, you need a good XRF of both the ring and core, lots of funky things happened to the 96 toonies, this coin looks promising, good luck !

Plated. The rim wouldnt be as fully-formed if this were a loonie planchet. https://www.PCGS.com/setregistry/co...gallery/1948Plus, loonies weigh 7 g; yours is the correct weight for a normal toonie. Please orient your photos the right way up in the future.

The last Obv photo shows that its not a solid coin, but has a core.

Found this, I new I had seen it somewhere. But until the OP gets back to us about the core, it will be hard to say either way. http://goccf.com/t/138108

I don't think it's plated, the center seems slightly darker than the ring though. Outer ring would have had to been plated before assembly if that was the case. Also it seems to resemble the German planchet maybe?

The weight is wrong for this coin to be on a loonie, but with an XRF maybe a foreign planchet

Comparing the OP coin to the one that JimmyD posted the link for, it is not a toonie struck on a loonie. The coins in the linked thread above is just a solid loonie planchet with not semblance of a separate core.

Can it be on loonie stock, but not on a loonie planchet? I.e., twoonie planchet punched from a sheet of loonie stock?

This scenario could happen where rogue employees take loonie stock and create a 7.3 gram toonie loonie. I have a 1996 solid nickel toonie weighing 7.5 grams been XRF does not match any Canadian planchets for this year, but they do exist or maybe RCM vp just order them for special gifts, an XRF will answer the question

Would a grading company do xrf testing as part of the process or does one have to find someone else for that? I only paid 7$ for this and have never tried having anything graded. Sll kinda new to me.
