I believe what your looking at is a shadow of the date. If metal was present around the date it could be considered
Mechanical Doubling but that's not the case here. Even if it was the case
Mechanical Doubling is looked at as a flaw by most collectors but I collect them!
Mechanical Doubling goes as far back as the
Flying Eagle cents. It is caused by the die machine parts shaking during a strike if you look hard enough you can find one in many dates.
