Is this a common thing? Looks like the nickel and copper had not mixed yet. The edge looks like a penny's edge. Is this thing worth anything?

Could be environmental issues, could be a copper plating wearing off. Could be the nickel being striped away.

It does appear to be a bad mix of metals. Not sure of value above face if any.

to the CCF Looks like exposed to some kind of chemical that changed its color.

This it is not an alloy mixt error. The Nickel could take those light red colors in some circumstances. Here it is just an external agent.
