Over Weight Wheat Penny - Coin Community Forum

Gregg6170 New Member United States 8 Posts	Posted 12/30/2022 2:20 pm I found a 1952 Wheat penny that is weighing in at 3.33 grams. I checked the scale and the other pennies from this Era are 3.1 grams. Any ideas? Report this Post to the Staff

I'm new to this and this was in the first batch of 50 pennies I checked. The copper alloy cents weigh 3.11 grams +/- 0.13 grams or 2.98 - 3.24gr to be in normal range Report this Post to the Staff

Typically there are a few reasons, a rolled thick planchet tends to be higher in weight such as this one is 4.0g https://www.error-ref.com/rolled-thick-planchets/ https://coins.ha.com/itm/errors/194.../1344-7667.s There are coins struck on other denominations, and coins struck when the composition of the coin changes but neither seems a fit. There are also foreign planchets etc you can look into but I dont see one right off the bat for a 1952-d that might be a fit. https://varietyerrors.com/wrong-pla...price-guide/ Any foreign substance on a coin can add on to weight. Can't tell in the current images but that can be another reason, and .08g outside of tolerance may not really entice any buyers if its not matched to one of the other mentioned items, but might be a keeper anyway regardless. Those upside-down weight is because was use after war Cu based alloy which can contain others metals. The coins was with normal % of Cu, so nothing special. 1952 Denver No foreign coins was struck.
