I'm wondering if anyone can identify this coin, or it would it be more appropriately labeled a token. There are several Napoleon satire tokens that I've seen but I can't I'd this one with the "parjure and traitor". Thank you.
Most of these are made from bronze 10-centime coins, which had the advantage of a low face value but a large surface area to play with!
There are some examples shown on this French website: http://www.horizonfr.com/les_dossie...leon_III.htm They are widely collected in France and nice examples can command high prices. If you Google "Monnaies Satiriques Napoleon III" you should be able to find more examples. I'm fairly sure I've seen a book about them in a French bookstore, and the now-defunct French coin magazine "Numismatique et Change" once published an article on them.
This is one of many Napoleon III satirical tokens. They can be divided into two categories; engraved on real host coins and those, like your token that are die struck. The latter exist in several sizes and some have struck loops. Your token calls Napoleon a liar and a traitor.
