On multiple occasions, a collector has noticed an apparent misspelling on a P C G S insert/label and posted a question about it here on CCF. It seems a good Q&A topic.

At one time, the system that P C G S used to print its inserts/labels had a 10-character limit for the coin name field - this lead to some "interesting" abbreviations that are often interpreted as misspellings. Here's a list of abbreviations of which I'm aware:

- PAN-PAC for PANAMA-PACIFIC
- STONE MT for STONE MOUNTAIN
- SESQUI for SESQUICENTENNIAL
- CONNECTICT for CONNECTICUT
- SPANISH T for SPANISH TRAIL
- LONG ISLAN for LONG ISLAND
- RHODE IS for RHODE ISLAND
- NEW ROCHEL for NEW ROCHELLE
- BTW for BOOKER T WASHINGTON
- WASH-CARV for WASHINGTON CARVER

Some of the abbreviations are part of current US commemorative lingo - PAN-PAC, BTW - but most are just an unusual alternative spelling for the sake of printing space.

Indeed, and I have a few of those commemoratives in their older PCGS slabs.

Pan Pac is otherwise known as an international swimming championship, comprising four countries: USA, Australia, Canada and Japan.

BTW is an abbreviation for 'By The Way', a phrase often used here in the CCF.
