Hi. Can you help me identify this coin which is listed in the catalogs as cupronickel material, instead the one in my possession is silver with a diameter of 27.3 mm, weight 8.7 g, thickness 2.15. Thank you.

josef57, are you sure that it is silver? The specs are very close to those for a cupronickel one: Weight 8.80 g; Diameter 27.40 mm; Thickness 2.15 mm.

What makes you think it's sliver?

After having checked the coin, a goldsmith told me that it is silver. Are you aware of any do-it-yourself method to be sure that it is silver? Should it weigh less? Thanks.

The inside of the outline of the coin is blackened, the typical color of silver. What do you think? I don't have much knowledge on the subject, and I rely on your expertise.

The color reminds me of common legal tender cupro-nickel coins that I've found with my metal detector and cleaned to put back into circulation - that would explain the patches of black and the reeding. The scratches on the obverse also look like evidence of cleaning. I would be surprised if a silver planchet happened to be lying around the Berne Mint seven years after they switched to cupro-nickel.

Thanks for your answers. Orefice used the classic cloth to clean silver, without solvents, I didn't agree, but he assured me that it was silver. Would it be worth having it appraised?

Tomorrow I'm going to show her to a different goldsmith.

That would be a good idea.
