I suspect that this is a coin, but there is no denomination inscribed on it. Also, although I was told it was Chinese, I have my doubts. I would appreciate any information on this piece.

I've seen many of these medals and you might be right in thinking it might not be Chinese. It seems more in the style of Japanese or Japanese-Occupied areas of China like Manchukuo. They were made to commemorate special occasions, battles, etc. I believe that the Japanese script of the time used Chinese characters instead of the simplified Japanese letters used today.
