These are not my pics. These are the ones from the seller I purchased this from. They are pretty decent though.

I have the Newcomb book, but that only goes back to 1816. I dont have the Sheldon book. So I am asking you fine folks, which variety is this?

It's a nice coin/condition for the variety. IF it were cleaned, that's a very minor problem as the coin exhibits no corrosion, so it should easily retone if that's your "thing".

I dont have it in hand yet, so I cant say one way or the other. I paid a fair price for it and its not in bad shape, so if it was cleaned at some time in its 200 plus years of existence, I'm not worried about it.

I concur, this is the S-277 R-2. This variety in the later die state is called the 12 star, because the reverse sink makes Star 1 disappear with strike weakness.

I'll soon be buying some of these large cent coins - so, what is "S-277 R-2" and where can I find out more information on this? I'm assuming some type of attribution, or is it a correlation to die pairs?

S-277 refers to the cataloged Sheldon die marriage number. R-2 is the ranking on the Sheldon rarity scale.

Early date large cents of 1793-1814 are by Sheldon number, while middle to late dates of 1816-1857 are by Newcomb number.

One may find this link useful, and from there you can see Dan Holmes' complete-by-variety Middle Date Large Cent collection as well, except for the 1825 Newcomb-5, the existence of which wasn't confirmed until a few years ago
